we can't teach what we don't know

Back to regular schedules, events, news, & volunteering

School's been back in session, some open houses have already taken place, most summer vacations are over now that Labor Day is past, and we're settling into our regular schedules and community activities. My email box is filling with notices for meetings. Join your local civic organization to help keep informed about your neighborhood and have a say in what happens here. Here are some upcoming meetings where you can have a say in this county:

Prince George's Co. Civic Federation meets the first Thurs. of every month (that'S TONIGHT!) about community issues pertaining to the whole county.

There are Solid Waste Transfer Station Study meetings to determine where they'll send our trash when our current county land fill fills up, which is very soon. The next meeting is September 11, 2007, 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm at Baden Fire Hall.

There's also a McMansion study as reported in the Post. There's already been 2 public forums and the third is on Oct. 3 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the M-NCPPC Parks and Recreation Administration Building, 6600 Kenilworth Avenue in Riverdale. To RSVP or get more information, contact the Prince George’s County Planning Board Office at 301-952-3560, or e-mail

For those interested in improving our public schools, there will be a High School Assessment Regional Hearing on Mon., Sept. 10 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. at Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Springdale. I understand they could make graduation solely based on one test and one that has biased social questions and is weak on some academic requirements. Also, it's not a requirement of Leave No Child Behind. There are some bright kids that don't test well, so this is a very bad idea.

And so it doesn't seem like all business, there's also:

The county fair which started today and lasts until Sun. (the 9th). If you've never been, then why not check it out? They even have a karaoke contest with the top prize of $1,000.

Prince of a County where you can enjoy a historic house tour, lecture, and food on Sept. 16 (deadline to RSVP today!).

A free open mic coffee house at Cafe Florian this Sat. night in Camp Springs at 8 PM for a wide variety of entertainment.

And if you'd like to contribute more to this county (or have a child, retired relative, or partner who does), there are some volunteer opportunities for Prince George's Co. Historical Society and Prince Georgians Care - the former can give community service credit to students. Some training is available, but most work can be done easily on your computer with copy-and-paste Word skills and some internet skills, depending on the job. Contacts are on their web sites.

If you're looking for a paid position, College Park Committee for Better Environment is looking for an intern to conduct an inventory of City's greenhouse emissions. Contact Janis Oppelt at 301-474-5358.
